Young and at Risk: Why Heart Attacks Are Rising in People Under 40

In recent years, cardiologists across India have noticed a worrying trend — heart attacks in patients under 40. Dr. Jyotirmaya Dash explores why this is happening and what young adults can do to protect themselves.

The Growing Epidemic

India accounts for nearly 60% of the world's heart disease burden, and the average age of first heart attack in India is nearly a decade younger than in Western countries. Increasingly, we are seeing patients in their 30s — and sometimes younger — with acute coronary events.

Key Risk Factors in Young Adults

  • Sedentary Lifestyle — Long working hours at desks, minimal physical activity
  • Chronic Stress — Work pressure and financial stress elevate cortisol, damaging blood vessels
  • Smoking and Tobacco — Extremely high rates in young Indian men
  • Poor Diet — High refined carbohydrates, trans fats, and processed food
  • Diabetes and Pre-diabetes — Increasingly common in younger Indians due to genetic predisposition
  • Substance Use — Alcohol and recreational drug use, including cocaine, can trigger cardiac events
  • Family History — Strong genetic component, especially in South Asian populations
  • Sleep Deprivation — Consistently getting less than 7 hours increases cardiac risk

How to Protect Yourself

Get a cardiac screening if you are above 30 with any risk factors. Quit smoking, exercise regularly, manage stress, and maintain a healthy weight. Know the symptoms — chest pain, breathlessness, jaw pain, and unexplained fatigue all warrant prompt evaluation.
