Difference Between ECG and Echo — Which Test Do You Need?

Many patients are confused about the difference between an ECG and an Echocardiogram. Dr. Jyotirmaya Dash explains both tests and when each is recommended.

What is an ECG?

An Electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG) records the electrical activity of the heart. It shows heart rate, rhythm, and can detect heart attacks, arrhythmias, and conduction abnormalities. It is a quick 5-minute test with immediate results.

What is an Echocardiogram?

An Echocardiogram (2D Echo) uses ultrasound waves to create moving images of the heart's structure. It shows the size, shape, and pumping function of the heart, and assesses the valves in real time. It takes approximately 20–30 minutes.
